the view :: week three :: part one

Earlier this week I took Kate for her first hike in Eldorado Canyon.
I was so excited and Kate was thrilled to be "going to the mountains."
(Please Note: One: If I am really excited about something involving Kate it will probably flop. Two: The canyon is in the foothills. The highest peak is 7, 240 ft.)

We started out strong.

I had packed snacks and water.
My camera was ready.
Kate was loaded up with sunscreen.

My first fail was not knowing the canyon well. I parked at the first spot I saw. I later learned I should have followed the road until it ended.
My second fail was mentioning Kate's stroller to her.
Lessons learned.

We did not end up hiking that far.
We walked up the road a bit, went through Whale's Tale (which is a neat little path with a few neat caves), watched the rock climbers, and then went back to the car to drive up the road a bit further.

We finally found the Visitor Center, chatted with some really nice ladies, learned about a better trail to try next time, discovered that they have some fun toddler/preschool activities, ate a lot of veggie sticks, stuck our toes in the South Boulder Creek, took a few pictures while standing on top of a picnic table, and then headed home.

For me this hike was not a success.
But I did get my toes wet (literally and figuratively) and I am better prepared for next time.
I am not giving up.
I am determined to give hiking a try with Kate.

And today we are going to do just that!
