instafriday

InstaFriday is a fun way to share the day-to-day moments you capture using your cell phone camera.

Here are a few photos I captured this past Saturday...

Making a card for Grammy's birthday.

Getting ready to surprise Grammy at Casa Bonita.

Waiting, Waiting, Waiting

Surprise birthday celebrations are exhausting when you are three and a half.

inspiration workshop {DIY}

It is week eighteen of Gussy Sews' inspiration workshop!  This week's prompt is DIY.

I must admit I am not one to conquer DIY projects.  I tend to let perfection get in the way of the project.

That said,  here a few projects I have thought about trying...

Do you like DIY projects?  Does perfection get in the way of you conquering a project?

inspiration workshop {family room}

It is week seventeen of Gussy Sews' inspiration workshop!  This week's prompt is FAMILY ROOM.

I am so excited for this week's prompt.  We spend a lot of time in our family room.  It is the spot to hang out in our home.  (It is also the only place in our house that has a TV and couches.)

This past March I re-did our family room.  I love the final look of the room and I am thrilled to share it as part of inspiration workshop!

This is the view from the front door.
Our couches are well loved and either needed to be replaced or covered.
We quickly discovered that what we wanted was way out of our price range so we ended using three-piece sofa covers from SureFit.
I could not be happier with how well the covers fit and how great they look!

The curtains, pillows, and blankets are all from Target.

I had been eyeing a ladder shelf for a long time.  I love how it looks.
I hope to fill it with more pictures and fun memories.

The area rug needed to be replaced (badly.)
I found this great rug at Target.
I love how this rug pulls the whole room together.

Another view of our couches.
(Currently the room is flipped the other way.  Someone was having issues with the sun/light glare on the TV.  Once I purchase some light blocking shades I am flipping the room back.)

This self from Target holds some of Kate's random toys, books, and games.
I am debating purchasing more fabric totes (in sage green and aqua) to hide all the other clutter.

I love our "family" heart banner from Lisa Leonard!

This sits right by our front door.
The lamp, mirror/key rack, and table are from Target.
The print is from Red Letter Words.

Along the other wall of our entryway is this sofa table.
It has some of our favorite family pictures on top.  Down below are a couple of baskets that hold all kinds of random things.
Above the table our a few of our favorite photos from our MckMama photoshoot a view years ago.

There are a view things I would love to add to our family room over the next year or two.
I would love to find a wreath, possibly season themed, to hang on the wall by the mirror.  I would also love to find a wodden letter of the first letter of our last name to place on the little shelf with the mirror.
And off course I will continue to fill and update the walls with pictures of our family.

What are some of the favorite things in your family room?

struggles

struggles.

We all have them.  Some struggles effect us every minute of every day.  Some creep up from time to time.  So we learn to live with and adapt to.

I have been struggling with our nighttime routine for the past month.  Saying good-bye to summer and hello to the classroom has caused a major disruption in our evenings.  I feel frazzled coming home... in a rush to pick up Kate, get dinner on the table, Kate's bath done, dishes washed, items to get ready for the next day, books to read, and a sweet little girl's back to rub.  Many nights I feel like I am behind and running out of time.  I fall into bed way later than I should and I am frustrated that I did not take a moment to breathe or enjoy something I love.  And of course because I am stressed, conversations and interactions with my husband are tense.  This has been a true struggle.  A draining of all-that-I-am-struggle.  Over and over again I have been saying "something has to give, something must change."  Yet I could not figure out what needed to change.  So forth I went, stressed, overwhelmed, not happy, hoping to catch a break of some kind.

Yesterday I caught that break.  My classroom was being used my a girl scout troop and I needed to leave at least twenty minutes earlier than normal.  I got all my after school duties done (except sharpening pencils) and headed out the door.  I was able to pick up Kate earlier than normal, we headed home and we both had time to play and relax before I had to start dinner.  I was able to sit, relax, and take a moment.  I was able to get dinner ready without feeling rushed.  We had a pleasant conversation at the dinner table and not a single stressed moment.  Kate was able to have enough time to play in the bath and after her bath before being rushed off to bed.  And I felt like I could breath again.  Who knew twenty minutes was all it took to change my nighttime routine.  Who knew twenty minutes could make me feel relaxed and calm.  Who knew twenty minutes could bring peace to this house.

I can't leave as early as I did yesterday every day.  I do hope to leave early at least three days a week.  Making this change will force me to let go of some things.  If I get my tasks done, if my students are learning, if the curriculum is taught, if I am ready for the next day, if I know I have done all I can for my students, then I should be able to walk out the door of my school for evening three days a week around 3:40 in the afternoon.  It does not make me a better teacher to stay later, it does not make me a better mom to stay late, it does not make me a better wife to stay late, it does not make me a better person.

If leaving twenty minutes earlier brings me inner peace, which leads to some happiness than I need to do it.  For my daughter, for my husband, for my students, for myself.

Life With Kate has changed over the past four years.  It started as a place to document Kate's life and it has become a space filled with inspiration, tales, and struggles.  It has become a place where I have found a new side to myself and connected with people around the world.  It has become a place where I want to share more than just Kate's milestones and more of me

I want this space to be an authentic, transparent, and  true reflection of me.  I hope to share more of my struggles, my thoughts, my ideas, my stories of motherhood, and the things that inspire and encourage me.  And of course I will continue to share pictures, milestones, and tales of sweet Kate.

Thank you for joining me on this journey!

not me monday

Mckmama- Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.
You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else has not been doing this week.

I did not allow my child to use pieces of packaging styrofoam as building blocks.

I also did not allow my darling daughter to destroy said pieces of packaging styrofoam all over the entryway of our home.

And of course the minute I noticed Kate destroying pieces of styrofoam I did not run and grab my camera to take pictures of the mess.

What kind of mother allows that to happen?!?

What have you not been up to this week?

insta friday :: favorite things

InstaFriday is a fun way to share the day-to-day moments you capture using your cell phone camera.

This week Jeannett at Life Rearragned gave us an InstFriday prompt:  Favorite Things.

So here are some photos of a few of my favorite things...

We just recently purchased a Keurig.  I love this machine.
A fresh cup of hot coffee in less than a minute.  Very easy clean up.
And Starbucks is coming out with K-Cups in November.
What more could I ask for?!?

I love these rings and all that they stand for.

My Erin Condren planner just arrived on Tuesday and I am already in love.
I cannot wait to get all my dates and information entered.
I cannot wait to feel a little more organized and together.

(Side Note: For a year I have been using Google Calendar.  It has some very positive attributes but I miss being able to quickly glance at my calendar.  I also miss being able to easily and visually combine my to-dos with my calendar. I am so happy to return to paper and meet my very visual needs!)

This is my newest favorite drawing by Kate.
It simply makes me smile.
She loves to draw people and I have enjoyed watching her people evolve over time.
The newest feature she is adding to people is eyebrows, ears, and hair.
